Over thirty years ago, when Wayne and I had just moved to Ossining with two young children, I ventured to the top of the steep hill overlooking the Hudson River Valley where Maryknoll sits. There I met Sister Helen at the Maryknoll Cloister. She became a dear friend. When Sister Helen was 68, she and several other sisters moved to Lemoa, a small rural village in the mountains of Guatemala, to be a prayer presence among the indigenous people of the Highlands, the Quiche. Sister Helen is now 96, and while we have continued to see her when she returns to Maryknoll every three years for a renewal time lasting three months, we have dreamed of visiting her in her beloved home among the Quiche people. Pura Vida, an organization growing out of a United Methodist Church in Colorado, has collaborated with the Maryknoll sisters’ mission in the Lemoa area for many years. Pura Vida welcomed us to join one of their work trips, including us in their group travel and hotel accommodations. Together we will build two simple cinderblock houses. Our church, The Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco, graciously supported this work project with a contribution for building materials.
I did my best, on the flight from New York LaGuardia Airport, to immerse myself in Spanish, and to switch gears to our Guatemalan adventure. I began reading What Prize Awaits Us, Letters from Guatemala by Bernice Kita, a Maryknoll sister who lived in rural Guatemala during the time of “La Violencia” in the early 1980s. I recalled that my letters to Sister Helen in the early 1990s had to be careful not to refer to any “sensitive” issues that might be noticed by the military, but this book gave me a deeper understanding of the suffering of the indigenous people of Guatemala. The brutal government of Rios-Montt systematically tortured and killed indigenous people. Since many of the indigenous farmers were Catholics, and the Catholic Church challenged the conditions of poverty in which the poor farmers lived, as well as repressive government tactics, indigenous people were seen as a threat.

We joined our group of 25 at the Houston Airport Saturday evening. Our flight lasted two and a half hours to Guatemala City, arriving at 10:30 p.m. Central time. We boarded a bus, after clearing immigration and customs, driven by Archie, who, along with our interpreter, Jose, became the newest two members of our team. These fine young Guatemalan men have learned excellent English, Jose through study, and Archie on the job as a driver for American construction and medical trips, including Pura Vida. With Archie skillfully at the steering wheel, our group could mostly release our white-knuckled grip of the seat in front of us as we crept and labored our way around the harrowing curves and inclines of the mountain roads.
Guatemala City at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night was virtually a ghost town, and it was a slightly eerie introduction to Guatemala. We followed a narrow two lane highway out of town, getting accustomed to the sound of grinding gears as our bus climbed out of the basin where Guatemala City is situated. But we could not get accustomed to the sights around us: deserted streets in a country’s largest city; no people walking around; low, simple buildings; many hovels lining the highway.
Antigua was our destination, only an hour’s drive from Guatemala City. Just outside of town, at midnight, we were stopped by Guatemalan police at a checkpoint. Our tour leaders, Laura and Mike Richards, explained that this was not unusual, and after some negotiations with Archie and Jose, including an exchange of money (a “tax” to get into the old city of Antigua), we were on our way, escorted by the police, over rough cobblestone streets, to our hotel. Antigua is a charming Spanish colonial town and an international center for language study. Its narrow streets are lined with one or two story stucco and stone buildings (a necessity because of earthquake destruction), colorfully painted, and with flowering bougainvillea and jacaranda trees.
We entered our hotel complex, amazed at the outdoor courtyard around which it was built, brimming with green and flowering plants and trees, with a fountain in the center. Our room was simple, but included our own toilet and even a shower! We dutifully remembered NOT to brush our teeth using tap water, and fell into bed for a short five-hour night’s sleep.
Sunday, February 28
We were up at 6:15 a.m., and after a bountiful breakfast complete with fresh Guatemalan pineapple and papaya, boarded our trusty bus, with Archie at the helm, for the drive to Chichicastenango. Chichi was to be our home for the week. In the beginning the drive wound through truck farms rich with green lettuces and cabbages. As we gained elevation, dry hills and mountains became more wooded, and patches of cultivation became smaller, terraced on the steep hillsides. We climbed into the Highlands, the part of Guatemala where most of the indigenous people live, and where traditional dress is worn. Here, too, they maintain old customs, many of which combine old Mayan religious traditions with newer Catholic or evangelical ones.
Around noon we arrived in Chichi, a bustling city with “chicken” buses arriving from every direction, overloaded vehicles full to the brim carrying indigenous folk from the surrounding mountains, to market day. Smaller vans held as many as 17-20 people, packed carefully, and with colorful embroidered cloths holding goods bought at the market on their rooftops. The sound of intrepid engines, grinding gears, and friendly honks resounded through the narrow streets, competing with upbeat Guatemalan music. It felt like a big, chaotic fiesta, quite the contrast to our quiet entry into Guatemala City late on Sunday night.
We settled into our exquisite Spanish colonial hotel, Hotel Santo Tomas, right on the main street through town. We were in the middle of the action! Fortunately, while our tiny second floor balcony gave us a bird’s-eye view of the frenetic activity on the street, the door to our room again opened onto a lovely courtyard, with two fountains, and exquisite flowers everywhere. It was a tiny paradise where the grime and noise of the street fell away.

It was time for lunch. We walked through the market to reach our restaurant, our first foray into the colorful chaos. We walked single file through the narrow, slightly claustrophobic walkways of the market, following the leader, trying not to be the one to get lost in the crush of people. Children, about ages 8-15, clung to us, hawking their embroidered wares in broken English: “Later? My name is Maria (Riccardo, Wendy, Manuelita…) You buy from me! Maybe later? Beautiful! You buy from me!” They were very persuasive, and by the end of our 10 minute walk, Wayne and I, neophyte tourists that we were, had spent too much money, feeling uncomfortable bartering for lower prices as is expected. We bought small purchases, two embroidered journals from Riccardo for Carter and Jenna, and embroidered bookmarks from Maria. Little did we know that Maria, Riccardo and Manuelita would become our friends, since every day when we left Hotel Santo Tomas at 8:00 a.m. and returned at 6:00 p.m., they would be there waiting for us, trying to sell us more treasures. They would greet us with big smiles, working their magic again and again. We also bought a beautifully embroidered wall hanging from Manuelita and three embroidered crosses from Maria for our three children.
At 3:45 we were on our way to the Methodist church for what we hoped would be a peaceful interlude from the market frenzy. I had taken one skirt along for the occasion since the Quiche women wear their bright-colored Mayan skirts and blouses every day. The cinderblock and stucco church was small, but it was in excellent condition, painted pristine white with gold letters over the open doorway (there was no actual door): “Templo Nacional Metodiste, Dios Con Nosotros.” It held about 50 worshipers. There were two pulpits in the front of the sanctuary, usually because there is the need for translating sermons from Spanish to Quiche. Today there were two interpreters, including one to translate for us, from Spanish into English.
The minister was a jovial, wiry, high energy man, perhaps in his late 30s. Since today was a once-a-year “offering” Sunday, all the congregants had brought a gift from their “bounty” to place on the long table in front of the pulpit. There were roosters and chickens in small cages, a rabbit, clusters of blue corn and yellow corn, flowers, squashes, potatoes, oranges, avocados, and more. Throughout the pastor’s animated sermon, women kept coming forward with more gifts. The minister inspired us with his quick smile, and his reminders that this community of faith gave generously, putting Dios first, especially when they needed money to finish building the church. They had acted on faith, not knowing where the money would come from, but the whole community came together to continue building. “Dios es primero!” He sprinkled his sermon with Biblical texts, about trusting in Dios above all, especially when it is most difficult to do so. There were more women than men in the pews, and lots of children, who were very well-behaved for a sermon lasting 45 minutes. Everyone seemed very contented and relaxed to be gathered there. After the sermon there was singing, accompanied by synthesized keyboard music. A young man projected the words on the wall behind the pulpit. The tunes were familiar, “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Thine Be the Glory,” and everyone sang in Spanish with gusto.

Then it was time to open up a marketplace for all the bounty before the altar. If you needed a chicken, here was your chance, and all the proceeds would go to the church. As tourists, we had been made aware that if we wanted to take pictures we should always ask, and everyone was very obliging. However, one stalwart woman in her early 50s, who begrudgingly agreed to let me take a picture, did not seem at all happy that she was on record for wrestling with the ornery rooster she was selling!
It was a spirited church service we shared with the indigenous people, lasting one and a half hours at least, spreading joy through the mountains.
Monday, February 29
Today we began our regular schedule: Breakfast was at 7:00 a.m., with fresh fruit, black beans, scrambled eggs, salsa and tortillas. All 27 of us gathered around the fountain in the courtyard after breakfast for simple devotions, a quiet and grateful moment together. We were eager to get our hands dirty with our construction projects, building two cinderblock houses in San Sebastian Lemoa.
We boarded our bus for a twenty minute drive through the mountainous terrain, twisting and turning around hairpin turns. Our first stop was the John Wesley Retreat Center, built by Methodists some 15 years ago, for the housing of young people on work trips, as well as for retreats and for an English language institute. This was where we would have lunch each day. After unloading lunch supplies, we divided into two construction groups, about twelve people for each site. Manuel, Marco, Elisio, and Otto, four young Guatemalan men hired by Pura Vida to be our construction foremen, also split up so that each work site would have two much-needed experts. We walked to our work site, a short ten minute walk which seemed longer in the 80 degree heat and at 6,000 feet altitude. Both Wayne and I had slight headaches from the altitude change from sea-level in Ossining. We were counseled to drink plenty of water.
It was a spirited church service we shared with the indigenous people, lasting one and a half hours at least, spreading joy through the mountains.

The Gonzalez family consisted of Magdalena (26) and Felipe (39), parents of five beautiful, dark-eyed children: Magdalena (11), Anna Maria (7), Selena (5), Fernando (4), and Osbin Pasqual (2). Felipe had been injured in a fall down the terraced mountainside many years ago. He suffered a bad concussion and spent quite some time in a hospital before returning home with a severe tremor in his body and an inability to do much work. The family thus qualified for help building a house next to Magdalena’s mother’s house where they have been living. Felipe greeted each one of us with a confident and grateful handshake. Magdalena was shy, but had a wonderful smile. The oldest two girls were at school, and the younger Selena and Fernando hid behind their Dad’s legs, while Osbin stayed securely attached to his mother, wrapped in the colorful woven cloth typical of the Quiche.
It was difficult to comprehend the poverty of this homestead. Magdalena’s mother’s house was a dilapidated adobe brick construction, with two rooms, a tin roof, and pieces of plastic suspended here and there, either to keep out leaks or to provide extra shade. Magdalena had clean laundry hanging on a line across the dry, dusty yard, where chickens and turkeys roamed. There were piles of chopped wood sharing the yard as well, and, of course, a cheap plastic soccer ball. There was little shade, but the children instinctively sought out every square inch of it, including a tiny shadow created by the two big water barrels we would be using to make concrete and mud. Those same barrels became part of a “peek-a-boo” game with Osbin who was beginning to smile shyly at our silliness.

Rebar needed to be bent, using a primitive tool, and shaped in to “C clamps.” Joy and I set ourselves to this task, one of us holding onto the rebar for dear life while the other pulled with all our might to bend the steel rebar around a nail. We switched off regularly in order to rest our challenged biceps. Charlie and Lisa worked next to us, forming their own rebar-bending team. We enjoyed the project, hot and difficult as it was.
The team took good care of each other. The First Aid Team (Wayne and me) reminded people to take water breaks. We also cleaned and covered the inevitable scrapes and scratches, using liberal amounts of antibiotic ointment. Carolyn brought around mid-morning energy snacks. Then, on to work, twisting freshly-cut wire ties (Wayne’s morning job with Carolyn and Steve, the pastor from the Loveland Colorado Methodist Church), using a pliers to twist it tightly around the rebar C clamps which in turn held together long fifteen foot rebar “ladders.” These ladders would form the inner reinforcement skeleton of the foundation as well as the six columns that will hold up the “casa.” It was tedious detail work, but important preparation for the pouring of cement.

At lunch time, we walked the short distance along the parched mountain road, back to the retreat center for lunch. The road is narrow and we were careful to walk single file as the ubiquitous, noisy, black-fume-spitting trucks and buses barreled along the roadway, often emitting a happy honk along with their smelly fumes. We noticed the ever-present sweet smell of burning wood in the air. Plumes of smoke rose here and there from farmers’ abodes scattered across the mountains, a cook fire perhaps, the burning of a corn field, or the burning of a family’s trash. We were well provided for at lunch. Terry, Chris and Donna left the worksite early to make nutritious lunches, wraps with canned chicken and black beans, all good protein for hungry construction workers.
After an hour lunch break, we set back to work, finishing the rebar work. The two oldest children, Magdalena and Anna Maria, were back from school since their public school day only lasts until noon. They were overcoming their shyness and were beginning to interact with us. Magdalena, as the oldest, led the way. While Quiche is her first language, she is learning Spanish in the public school in Lemoa, and we were able to communicate enough to elicit happy smiles and laughter from each other. She wanted to help us build her casa, and she began by fetching more wire and more C clamps when we ran out. But she was observant, and she also wanted to try her hand with the wrench and twisting those wires taut until the end of the wire twisted off. Magdalena became a master of this, and she was having the time of her life! Slowly on Anna Maria, Selena, and Fernando became more courageous as well, and they began helping too, picking up the scraps of wire. I asked if I could take photographs, and they smiled broadly in agreement. As soon as the camera clicked, they swarmed around me, having learned that they could immediately see an image of themselves. That was magical! Their eyes opened wide with wonder, and peals of laughter burst forth from those joyous children. Their faces mirrored my own wonder and joy at the miracle of being in this moment in time and space, just a February 29, a leap year day in 2016, in the Highlands of a Quiche Guatemalan village called Lemoa. A moment in time blessed by the eternal joy of human love and friendship.
Mid-afternoon brought an end to our rebar project. It was time to prepare the cement for the foundation! The excitement was palpable. Manuel sprang into action, our cement expert. We took turns mixing sand and dry cement, moving the huge pile three times in order to mix it well. Then the pile was cratered, making room for the pile of rocks in the center which were then doused with water. This had to stand for fifteen minutes or so. At the right moment Manuel did the mixing, exact amounts of sand/cement mixture with rocks and water. He worked carefully and quickly, and we received his offerings of buckets full of slimy cement with our bucket brigade. This was a symphonic moment, all themes culminating in a mutual effort, all in concert, adults and children alike. Manuel to Charlie to Nelva to Magdalena to Joy to Steve to pour into the foundation. Anna Maria and Fernando waited for the empty pails at the other end, hurrying them back to Manuel so we could repeat that theme again and again. What joy was in that bucket brigade, and in the end the cement foundation was poured for three of four walls.
End of afternoon. Dusty, tired, happy. More “conversations” in broken Spanish, conversations punctuated more by smiles than words, the common human language that breaks all cultural barriers. “Manana?” asked the children. “Non. Miercoles,” I replied. Sadness in their eyes and ours. We would miss each other as tomorrow we would be at the other work site. Hugs and more hugs.
The bus chugged its way back to Chichi. In front of Hotel Santo Tomas was the entourage of Quiche women in their lovely embroidered skirts and blouses, waited to sell us more of their wares. We resisted. We showered, and went to dinner at 7:00 p.m. After dinner we gathered in a meeting hall for devotions and for planning the next day. Steve, pastor of the Loveland Methodist Church where 19 of our 25 volunteers are from, lead devotions. He told a story which culminated in a question for discussion, followed by a prayer.
Bedtime was early for all of us weary workers. We were asleep by 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 1
Today we will see Sister Helen and Sister Connie! I awoke at 5:30 a.m. Thank you, God, for today. Thank you for bringing us to Lemoa. Bless the sisters in their work, opening hearts across cultures. Bless them for building this opportunity to expand our understanding of being human, across barriers, strengthened and gathered into loving community.
Our morning routine is well-established already. Breakfast at 7 a.m. with our bright-eyed group of 27. At 7:50 we gather around the fountain for devotions. At 8:00 we are on the bus, count to 27 to make sure all are accounted for, and off we go from Chichi to Lemoa.
Archie cranked and shifted our bus, which he polishes each and every day before leaving, up and around the S curves, through the arid mountains for our twenty minute drive. This is the dry season, with the rainy season arriving in May or June when it is very hot and humid, raining hard every day. The mountainsides are dotted with adobe casas, each with its small plot of clay soil where the people grow their corn and beans. The ravines and hillsides are partially tree-covered, evergreens with needles that are longer and finer than our northerly pines, and with orange, lemon, avocado and banana trees. One avocado tree can produce as many as 4,000 avocados in a season.
Today we would switch work sites, Team 1 going to the Gonzales family, and we (Team 2) to Lorenzo’s family. Lorenzo and his wife Catarina have ten children. Lorenzo, like Felipe, sustained a bad injury and cannot do much work. He was cycling one day, carrying a machete, and fell off the bike, severely injuring his leg with the machete. He now pedals around selling ice cream, not making enough quetsales to support ten children.
End of afternoon. Dusty, tired, happy. More “conversations” in broken Spanish, conversations punctuated more by smiles than words, the common human language that breaks all cultural barriers. “Manana?” asked the children. “Non. Miercoles,” I replied. Sadness in their eyes and ours. We would miss each other as tomorrow we would be at the other work site. Hugs and more hugs.
The bus chugged its way back to Chichi. In front of Hotel Santo Tomas was the entourage of Quiche women in their lovely embroidered skirts and blouses, waited to sell us more of their wares. We resisted. We showered, and went to dinner at 7:00 p.m. After dinner we gathered in a meeting hall for devotions and for planning the next day. Steve, pastor of the Loveland Methodist Church where 19 of our 25 volunteers are from, lead devotions. He told a story which culminated in a question for discussion, followed by a prayer.
Bedtime was early for all of us weary workers. We were asleep by 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 1
Today we will see Sister Helen and Sister Connie! I awoke at 5:30 a.m. Thank you, God, for today. Thank you for bringing us to Lemoa. Bless the sisters in their work, opening hearts across cultures. Bless them for building this opportunity to expand our understanding of being human, across barriers, strengthened and gathered into loving community.
Our morning routine is well-established already. Breakfast at 7 a.m. with our bright-eyed group of 27. At 7:50 we gather around the fountain for devotions. At 8:00 we are on the bus, count to 27 to make sure all are accounted for, and off we go from Chichi to Lemoa.
Archie cranked and shifted our bus, which he polishes each and every day before leaving, up and around the S curves, through the arid mountains for our twenty minute drive. This is the dry season, with the rainy season arriving in May or June when it is very hot and humid, raining hard every day. The mountainsides are dotted with adobe casas, each with its small plot of clay soil where the people grow their corn and beans. The ravines and hillsides are partially tree-covered, evergreens with needles that are longer and finer than our northerly pines, and with orange, lemon, avocado and banana trees. One avocado tree can produce as many as 4,000 avocados in a season.
Today we would switch work sites, Team 1 going to the Gonzales family, and we (Team 2) to Lorenzo’s family. Lorenzo and his wife Catarina have ten children. Lorenzo, like Felipe, sustained a bad injury and cannot do much work. He was cycling one day, carrying a machete, and fell off the bike, severely injuring his leg with the machete. He now pedals around selling ice cream, not making enough quetsales to support ten children.
We walked down a hard-packed clay road toward Catarina’s mother’s house where the family has been living. Tall, twisted, dry, brown corn stalks stood above deep furrows, forlorn in the heat of the morning, many plots not yet burned for the ash which provides fertilizer for next season’s planting. Clusters of the adobe buildings with clay tile or tin rooftops lay tucked back from the road a bit. Many houses have no windows, while others may have a couple of small windows covered by wooden slats. Children played happily with each other, with little supervision, and yet seemed to have no altercations that would require intervention. They peeked around corners at the “gringos” walking by, responding to our “holas” with giggles and curiosity. Often they would venture closer, eager to exchange pleasantries: “Como se llamo?” Quanto anos tiene?” Women walked familiar, worn paths, or followed the clay road, on their way to and from the village. Their supplies, carried on their heads and wrapped in the colorful woven cloths, also provided them much-needed shade. As women walked, they often were weaving long pieces of straw into bands for hats. As they disappeared from sight, around a bend, down a hill, I found myself wondering about them: How far into the hills was their daily trek? How many children awaited them? Were a couple of the children lucky enough to be in school for half of the day?

Today’s work on Lorenzo’s house would entail building up the cinderblock walls. We were grateful to be done with rebar for the time being as we were all nursing bruises or soreness from the repetitive movements of twisting rebar. First, we made the mud, not to be confused with concrete, which includes stones and is used for the foundations, not between the cinderblocks. Then we worked in twos, one applying just the right amount of the mud, using trowels, and the other placing the cinderblock and using a hammer to tap it into perfect placement along the plumb line. Elisio and Otto provided quality control, a little too much mud, or too little. Alongside the laughter and teamwork, our cinderblock wall began to rise, four layers high by day’s end. |
We stopped work by 3:30 today because we were all going to visit Sisters Helen and Connie at their residence which is attached to a large Spanish colonial church, Iglisio San Sebastian. The church sits high up on top a hill, with a commanding view overlooking the village. The bus ground its gears up the steep incline. I could barely wait to ring Sister Helen’s doorbell, much as I had done some thirty years ago at the Maryknoll cloister, which also sits at the top of a hill with a beautiful view overlooking the Hudson River Valley. I could barely wait to throw my arms around her, this dear friend that we have dreamed about visiting in her Guatemalan home. |
We entered the church’s sunny courtyard, white walls, azure blue skies stretched above. In the corner, in the doorway, stood our friends. The last few yards I nearly ran to meet Sister Helen, and true to our longstanding habit, we opened both our arms wide with joyful greeting. And then everyone in our work crew had their turn to greet both of the sisters and to introduce themselves. Everyone received the same strong embrace, each a blessing. We entered into the sister’s home, a living room and kitchen, a worship room with two chairs and a simple altar of local wood found by the sisters, and four small bedrooms. They showed us their courtyard garden where a towering Jacaranda filled their sky with purple blossoms each Lenten season. Next to it was a lemon tree Sister Helen had planted many years ago. These two beautiful trees shared the expanse of blue sky with this small village’s red and white cell tower!
The sisters guided us into the large, stucco church. The nave was painted white, while the floor had decorative green and red tiles. The roof and ceiling were rough-hewn timbers, and there were wooden benches. Behind the altar was a painted stucco altar piece, bright green, with a variety of spiraling colors on the columns around it. At the top, in a cage of heavy metal, was the Virgin Mary in Quiche dress, and beneath her, also imprisoned, San Sebastian, the patron saint of the village of Lemoa. Sadly, since people had broken into the church to steal the valuable statuary, the town had placed all of its saints in iron cages. The sisters lamented that their beloved saints needed to be under lock and key. We sat on the wooden benches as the sisters recounted the religious history of Lemoa and the surrounding areas. While before La Violencia 95% of the people were Catholic, now most of them had converted to evangelical churches. During La Violencia, men who would not convert were tortured and murdered, and, in fact, the sister’s living room had been used for torture. Even young boys were rounded up and taught to kill. I asked the sisters if they had ever been in danger. Since their primary mission has always been a contemplative one, the police were less threatened by them than if they had been community organizers. Sister Helen recalled that shortly after her arrival in Lemoa, the police had come to check out their presence at the church, but found nothing suspicious, and had never bothered them again. Instead of one large Catholic Church like San Sebastian, there are now approximately eleven small evangelical churches, all with small memberships of perhaps 20-50. Sister Connie expressed their sadness that the people no longer gather together as a large community as a result of this splintering of churches. Mass is celebrated only once a month in this large church. For other celebrations of the mass, the sisters drive to the town of Santa Cruz twenty minutes down the mountain road.
The sisters served us all homemade chocolate chip cookies and lemonade made with the use of their ingenious, sun-driven water filter. Happily, Wayne and I had brought six new bags of chocolate chips with us to give to the sisters so that the next Pura Vida group arriving in Lemoa will also get fresh cookies! We learned about some of the projects in which the sisters are involved, including water filtration, cook stoves to reduce air pollution in the houses, and solar lamps so children have light by which to do their homework. We grateful visitors bid the sisters goodbye, with a promise that Wayne and I would return on Thursday to share a noon-day meal.

A morning of festivities was planned for us, and as we stepped off our bus, we were greeted with a sea of bouncing color. About 175 happy children gathered outside in the clay courtyard awaited us, and they called out their excited greetings. Pura Vida has an ongoing relationship with the teachers and students at the Rosario School, and some of the children whose families would not be able to afford even the small expenses for supplies, receive scholarships from Pura Vida. A stage at the far end of the courtyard, fashioned from the ubiquitous reddish clay, was decorated with a Bienvenidos banner, student-created clouds, a sun, and balloons. Teachers skillfully shepherded their students into rows near the stage. The girls wore their traditional woven skirts and embroidered blouses, and the boys looked like any American schoolboy with t shirts and jeans. To one side of the stage, student chairs awaited their American guests. A covering of pine needles provided a green carpet for the stage, edged with a lovely line of pink blossoms and white calla lilies.
Students were well-behaved, at least at first, standing patiently in their rows along the stage while their principal, their teachers, and two local town leaders were introduced to us, and then thanked God for us, all in duplicate, first in Spanish, then translated into English. As time slipped by to thirty minutes or more, the natives grew a bit restless, and well-formed lines morphed into a giant cluster of chatting children. Many 4th-6th grade boys wandered off toward the now-condemned government work site, climbing in and around the lumber posts. Their teachers did not seem bothered, and the program proceeded with no problems. A first grade class sang two songs for us, one a vowel song, complete with hand motions. A fifth grader recited a poem about friendship which she had written and won an award for. Two kindergartners, dressed up in giant paper bag heads and overcoats to look like minions, danced around the stage to salsa music, and we all laughed until we cried.
One little girl, about seven years old, all dressed up in blue, kept watching me carefully as the crowd of children kept snaking closer and closer to the seated guests. I felt like I could nearly read her mind: “No, I don’t quite want to smile…but let me peak around the boy next to me…I’ll smile a little, but no eye contact…Oh, I guess a smile won’t hurt…Let me see, what kind of mischief can I get into?..Aha!...just you wait…Look. See? My hands are empty and I haven’t thrown a thing!...Well, these pretty pink flowers on the edge of the stage…I think I’ll toss them at the boys…

After lunch at the retreat center, we returned to Felipe and Magdalena’s house to continue building. The smiles on the children’s faces, and their warm hugs of greeting, were all we needed to put in our best work. Ana Maria especially was at my side all afternoon, sifting sand for concrete, filling the one wheelbarrow perfectly to the top because that was our measurement for making concrete. Today we needed cement for the “U block” layer which is about half way up the wall, a sturdy layer containing more rebar ladders. Ana Maria ran the empty buckets back to the beginning of the bucket brigade each time we emptied one. We worked late today because we had extra cement which we did not want to waste.
Tired, dirty, and happy, we placed ourselves in the care of Archie for the ride back to Hotel Santo Tomas for dinner, devotions, a little journal writing, and bed.

Today our first stop was a visit to a casa Pura Vida had constructed a year ago with donations from the family of one of our team members, in honor of their mother’s 90th birthday. Since our group will be constructing just over half of the two houses we are working on this week, this visit would allow us to see a finished product.
We walked down the narrow clay path in single file. Tall brown corn stalks stood like sentinels at our left flank. A bit ahead, just where the path turned left toward the casa, stood a tiny white stucco church: Iglesia de Dios Betesda. Our path was now surrounded on all sides by corn stalks, a dense tangle of gold and brown. The tangle thickened into a world of woven squash vines grown as tall as a tree. We had entered a maze of arid brown stalks and vines, a secret entry way to Ana Luisa’s “settlement.” Then came the five laughing children, also single-file on the narrow path, running to greet all 27 of us with hugs.

The complex was meticulously cleaned and organized. Sticks for firewood leaned carefully, also single file, against a tree. A tarp attached to four tree posts stretched over an outdoor eating area between the small wooden kitchen shed and the two room cinderblock house. Clay floors were swept perfectly clean. The cooking shed beckoned with a delicious aroma. Inside to the right was a wooden corn crib, well stocked with carefully stacked dried corn cobs, hopefully enough to grind for tortillas until the next harvest. To the left was an iron stove, with a fire kindled inside, and a pot of something delicious cooking for the noonday meal. This kitchen too had everything carefully in its place. We entered the casa to the children’s room. Backpacks hung neatly on cinderblock walls. Two beds were made of four cinderblocks each, with a simple wooden board laid over them. The other room held one larger bed of the same construction. Clothes closets consisted of a rope hung between two walls, laden with bright Quiche clothing. A few pictures adorned the walls, including one of the building of the house a year ago. A tin roof formed the ceiling. Another “shed,” a simple stick construction, covered a running water tap. Yet another wooden coop provided cover for chickens. Under a tree was another work space, with a table created out of four tree trunks for legs and a wooden slab for the top. Here, a variety of squashes were piled up. Altogether, these distinct work areas created a most pleasant and cozy homestead.
Ana Luisa’s six children scampered happily around us, dodging around trees, darting in and out of work areas. Ana Luisa was pregnant with number seven. Her husband is often gone seeking work. Through our interpreters Jose and Manuel, she spoke to us in Quiche, thanking God for us and for this house where she feels safe. She, like many of the Quiche men and women, had very few teeth in her mouth. Some of them have gold fillings around their front teeth. By the time we left Ana Luisa’s complex, the children had missed the school bus so they hopped on the bus with us for the short ride into Lemoa center and the escuela publico.
Archie dropped off most of the workers at the worksites, and then drove eight of us who were teachers back to the Cornstalk School to spend time in some classrooms. Chris and I went to a sixth grade classroom where Laura was the teacher. The students ranged in age from 11-14, depending on their skill level. Since they were engaged in a hands-on project using yarn and colored paper to fashion simple cells, we had the opportunity to ask Laura some questions. With the help of Archie, we had a fascinating conversation.
Is it difficult to keep a disciplined classroom with sixth graders? Yes, it is hard work because of their age.
Since the public schools end after sixth grade, will any of your students go on to Basico (Middle School)? No. No one in this class of twenty students will go on, either because they cannot pay the necessary money for uniforms and books, or they don’t have the motivation to commute to Chichi or Santa Cruz, a twenty minute bus ride, each day.
What do the students do after finishing sixth grade? The boys mostly work with their fathers. The girls usually marry at sixteen or seventeen, and begin having children.
Are there any big problems, especially the young boys hanging around with little to do? Drugs? Gangs? Vandalism? Not really. The villages like Lemoa have Mayan leaders who have strong leadership. If a boy is causing problems, he must meet with them and receive a warning or a punishment. Generally, that is enough to deter bad behavior. (Sisters Helen and Connie had also told us a story about village justice. One boy in Lemoa was using drugs. The Mayan leaders called the village together on the steps of Iglesia San Sebastian. The young man stood on top of the stairs, with the village calling out to him not to do drugs. He apologized to the community. This deterrent seemed to work to help him change his ways.)

While I visited the school, Wayne worked at Lorenzo and Catarina’s house. Four rows of cinderblocks were in place, as well as a fifth row of U blocks. At 11:30 a.m., accompanied by Laura and Mike Richards, Wayne and I walked down the pine-covered hill from the retreat center, making our way past the lake, on our way to visit Sister Helen and Sister Connie. We heard the lovely, persistent call of big black birds accompanied by the chatter of a myriad of smaller birds. In this lake, in the past, women would come carrying their bundles of clothing, expertly balanced on their heads, to do their washing. As time went by, the soap suds choked off oxygen in the lake, causing algae to grow and killing fish. Now most women have access to running water closer to home, and I saw only one woman at the water’s edge washing her clothes. We also saw a replica of an ancient Mayan “basketball court,” with two high stone walls, one of which had a stone circle perhaps twenty feet up the wall. It was not easy to get the ball through the hoop because the men could only use shoulders, elbows, and torso to hit the ball. The man who won the game was apparently put to death. From the lake we began the steep climb up a Lemoa street, to the top of the hill where Iglesio San Sebastian commands its imposing position overlooking the village.
The sisters had invited Wayne and me to share their noonday meal, and Sister Helen greeted us wearing her apron. After a few finishing touches, Sister Connie read a Spanish prayer before we sat down to a feast of pork garnished with onion and garlic, mashed potatoes, and fresh peas, all purchased at the Tuesday market on the square in front of the church. It was delicious! Sister Helen has often eaten in our home, but to share a meal prepared by her, in Lemoa, was a joy. I thought back to the times in the early 1980s when Sister Helen was a cloistered sister in the traditional sense. A lovely, undulating wall surrounded their cloister, not a tall one, but significant in its symbolism. The sisters for the most part did not exit those walls. Theirs was a life primarily of silence and prayer. I was always welcomed warmly to sit quietly in their side chapel, to visit with Sister Helen, to join them for evening prayer, or to partake of the mass with them. But Sister Helen could not leave the cloister to join us in our home for a meal. Later in the 1980s the cloistered sisters opened their walls, renaming their cloister a contemplative community. Sister Helen was now able to come to our home to share a meal. That moment was a true communion. And now we broke bread together in her home, her offering of love, our joyful communion in Lemoa.
I asked the sisters about a typical day in their lives. They arise very early, Sister Helen possibly at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. That is Sister Helen’s time for meditation and prayer, while Sister Connie does Chigong. Morning prayer is at 7:00 a.m., followed by breakfast. Sister Helen is a voracious reader. Having requested and received a Kindle for her 90th birthday, the sisters were even able to secure a Wifi connection. They both spend a fair amount of time connected to the internet in this tiny mountain village. Sister Helen reads spiritual literature, keeping them abreast of new spirituality. They are also connected to a broader catholic community. A couple of hours north of them, in San Andres, live two other Maryknoll sisters, including Bernice Kita, author of the book What Prize Awaits Us. These sisters usually visit Helen and Connie in Lemoa twice a month. There are also sisters living along the Caribbean coast of Guatemala whom they see about four times a year for meetings in Guatemala City. There are also the daily visits from local women and children.
While we were having dinner, a little past noon, the doorbell rang. Sister Helen jumped up to answer and Sister Connie commented that their visitors always seem to come at dinner time! I followed Sister Helen to observe a moment of her daily encounters. She was greeted by a young woman who was carrying her approximately eighteen month old baby in a sling on her back. Her older son was in the hospital sick, and she needed bus money to visit him. Sister Helen listened attentively, asked a few questions, and then left briefly to get a bit of money for her bus fare. With the help of local leaders, the sisters receive input on which villagers are truly needy. A few minutes later a young woman joined us at dinner. Valentina was spirited and had a quick smile. She has been living with the sisters for six months, and will stay with them until her graduation as a social worker. With Sister Helen and Sister Connie translating, we learned about her field work in Lemoa. Her grandfather had been killed in La Violencia.
After dinner, Sister Helen brought out an absolutely perfect pineapple upside down cake she had baked for us. What a beautiful effort she made on our behalf, and I had to have two pieces in order to properly show my appreciation!

At 1:00 Dolores, the thirteen year old girl our family is supporting, came to visit us. Sister Helen has known her family for many years, both her mother and her grandmother. Dolores finished the public school education in Lemoa, and like her older sister Joselyn, very much wanted to continue on to “Basico” in Santa Cruz. With a $450 contribution, Dolores can continue to go to school for a year. With Sister Helen’s help, we were able to communicate in Spanish. Dolores told us that she had twelve different classes each day, computer, religion, Spanish, English, music, history, science, physical education, and more. Her favorite classes are computer and music. She plays a flute, and loves the music competitions they have with small bands competing with each other. There are drum bands, brass bands and flute bands. She has approximately one hour a day of homework, sometimes more. Sister Helen reminded her several times how important it was that she study hard, like her older sister who is in the ninth grade and would like to become a bi-lingual secretary. We showed Dolores pictures of our family. We promised to stay in touch via Sister Helen’s skype connection and by letter.
We walked back to the retreat center mid-afternoon, finding our fellow workers finished with Lorenzo and Catarina’s house, at least to the point at which we stop and the next Pura Vida work crew commences, at the end of March. They had finished pouring the U blocks full of cement and five layers of cinderblocks were in place. For devotions tonight we discussed the question, “How do we want to walk through life?” We spoke of our desire to walk together, not alone. A symbol for this became those rebar C clamps we cranked into shape on Monday. For our prayer, we all stood and linked arms, forming C clamps, much stronger together than separate. |

Our last day of work brought a little sadness. Since we were ahead of our work schedule, Laura talked to Mark Ely, the director of Pura Vida, about another job we might begin. So Friday morning half of the group went back to finish work on Felipe and Magdalena’s house, and the rest of us went to an entirely new site, the house of Francesca, mother of a daughter and a three year old son named Luca. Her husband had abandoned them, and they were currently living with her mother in a rather dilapidated domicile with plastic hung over parts of the roof to keep out rain. Our job was to begin prepping the land for a foundation. We also measured a circle, six feet in diameter, where we began to dig into the hard-as-rock soil for a latrine. This hole would eventually go down twelve feet. Our one pickaxe was the only effective tool to break through the parched clay. After the soil was loosened, we used shovels to scoop away the dirt, and by the end of the morning a small group had painstakingly dug down about two feet. The rest of us cleared a piece of land, about 25 feet by 25 feet, for the foundation. The land was covered with thistles and tough, brown corn stalks. Some of us used large hoes to loosen the earth, while others pulled out the loosened vegetation. It was hard work!
In the corner of the future house stood a tall, mature banana plant. It needed to be saved as it provided an important food source for Francesca and her family. Wayne started digging to find the roots. Soon Bob, Rob, and Archie joined in the battle, as well as Francesca herself. With dogged determination they used every primitive tool at their disposal to coax that banana tree free. They hacked, and they consulted on strategies. They tried slipping a rope under the roots they had exposed about a foot and a half down, all pulling together, to no avail. Finally, after undermining it from all sides, they pushed and pulled, and slowly it gave in and fell to one side. It was much too large to carry away, so they rolled it off to one side. Later, Francesca would herself split it into three or four smaller banana trees with her machete, and plant those. What an effort that was, and we all clapped and hollered when it went down! Big smiles broke out on Guatemalan and American faces alike.

While I was helping to hack away corn stalks and thistles, mischievous Luca tried to get our attention to play: “Hola! Hola! Hola!” This impish little boy would not take “trabajo” (work) for an answer. He found two discarded bits of trash in the yard, bottle caps from plastic water bottles, and started to hurl them in my direction. With his persuasive gestures, I was soon playing catch with him, tossing them to him, and then he back to me. Every time I successfully caught them, his peals of laughter communicated that he had never had such fun in his life. When I finally insisted on going back to “trabajo,” he picked up a small hoe himself and started working too. Periodically, the “Hola!” rang out again, precipitating another round of “Catch the bottle cap.” We could not have asked for a more joyful last morning of working alongside this little family. |
At 11:00 a.m. our Archie-driven bus carried us back to Magdalena and Felipe’s house for a blessing of their half-completed house and for good byes. Magdalena, Ana Maria, Selena, and Fernando greeted each one of us with warm hugs as we stepped off the bus. We gathered in front of the house for a picture, workers and family bonded together as strongly as the cement we had poured. Then we circled around the casa, all laying hands on the top layer of cinderblocks, while Steve said a prayer of blessing for this home of protection and love. There were more hugs, all the way to the doors of the bus. One more last special hug for Ana Maria. “Buen suerte! Via con Dios!” We will miss this dear family, and we will treasure memories that are as lasting as our names which we etched into the wet concrete of the fifth layer of their new casa. |

Together, we had been on the bucket brigade, sharing the heavy load, and with Naomi hurrying the empty bucket back to the source. Again and again. Her smile was still a bit shy, but it broke like sunshine across her face. We waved and waved until they were out of sight.

Cristina, one of the four students who had greeted us, became our guide to show us around the school. She was dressed in western clothing, not the traditional Quiche dress we had become accustomed to, but explained that on school days all students wear a uniform. Cristina was a poised and dedicated student who wished to become a bi-lingual teacher one day. When she completes “Basico,” which is grades 7, 8 and 9, she will go on to “Diversification,” grades 10-12. During Diversification, students are encouraged to choose a direction such as teaching, medicine, or business. Cristina explained that the school gets used intensively, with the elementary grades in class from 7:00 a.m. until noon, and middle school and high school students attending classes from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m..
After our visit, the principal/pastor boarded the bus with us to say a prayer, a fervent prayer of gratitude and blessing for Pura Vida and for the John Wesley School of Santa Cruz.
