There was a large eruption of Volcan de Fuego near Antigua on Sunday, June 3rd.  Guatemalan disaster relief agency Conred estimates:

  • 1,702,136 affected
  • 3,271 evacuated
  • 1,916 in temporary shelters
  • 65 killed
  • 46 injured

The volcano is far from our program areas, so our students and staff were not greatly affected.  We did have a team in country that managed to fly out just before the eruption caused the airport to close.  At this time we do not expect any issues with our upcoming teams.

The Guatemala City airport reopened on June 4th, and normal air travel is expected to resume soon.  If you are departing on one of our trips to Guatemala in June, we will let you know if there are any changes in the situation.
