Urgent Food Insecurity in Guatemala
We've all experienced the COVID-19 lockdowns here in the United States.  Imagine what a lockdown is like in a place with extreme poverty and limited infrastructure.  Rural Guatemalan families are experiencing a domino-effect of consequences:

  • Abnormally dry conditions caused a poor harvest last year
  • Families are now between the planting and harvest seasons, the most vulnerable time for subsistence farmers
  • Remittances from the U.S. are down sharply due to unemployment
  • Many incomes depend on informal job market, which is basically shut down
  • All public transportation is prohibited, making it hard to get things to market
  • Many families were already living on the edge when COVID-19 hit
  • Unlike in the U.S., the government has not been able to provide much support

There is no safety net for these families.  You can help us provide one.

​​Memorial fund established to provide emergency nutrition

​We have established a memorial fund in memory of longtime friend Sister Connie to provide this urgently needed nutrition.  Sister Connie was always concerned about providing nutrition in rural Guatemala.  We think this is a fitting way to remember her.

Working with village leaders, our staff has identified the families most in need of food. These families are not necessarily related to our programs, but live in or near the villages we partner with.

We hope to complete fundraising by July 2, which would have been Sister Connie's 85th birthday.
