October 3, 2009

Our concert fundraiser with groups FACE and Mile 21 raised $39,068 for the Phase 3 expansion. Thanks to everyone who donated! Phase 3 construction will begin later this month.

January 15, 2009 Phase 2 construction is now complete. See photos of the dedication ceremony:

October 22, 2008

Phase 2 demolition has begun.

October 8, 2008

We have received a new Phase 2 estimate based on scaled-back criteria. The firm bid is for $87,000, which will cover the addition of 3 new classrooms on the second level. A cement staircase will be constructed as well. We have advised the John Wesley School to proceed with this bid. We expect construction to begin in late October.

September 27, 2008

Due to increasing material prices, the final bid for Phase 2 construction came in at $138,348. Steel and cement have skyrocketed in past months. Due to the increased cost and considering the donation threshold reached thus far, we have asked to have Phase 2 construction re-estimated to include only the addition of 3 classrooms on the upper level.

March, 2008

We have received a rough estimate for Phase 2 construction. About $120,000 will be required to complete the following:

  • Demolish and rebuild the administration wing
  • Build an additional 3 classrooms on the second level to accommodate grades 10 - 12.

January 11 , 2008

Phase 1 construction is complete. The quality of the new classrooms is much beyond expected. The classrooms are bigger, taller, and brighter. The kids are very happy with their new school. Here are some photos from the dedication ceremony.

October 1, 2007

Final bids are in, and we have a contract with a builder. Although the bids came in much higher than expected, we are still close to funding the project. The plan is to demolish and rebuild the two classroom wings in Phase 1. This will provide two additional classrooms over what they currently have, which will satisfy local government requirements for high school class space. Phase 2 will consist of rebuilding the smaller administration wing and putting up as much of the second level as possible.

We have paid a 40% deposit to the construction company, and demolition is slated to begin on October 10th. The builders are confident they will be able to finish Phase 1 before school starts in mid-January.

Note that we are still about $10,000 shy of the final bid amount. Please contact us if you would like to help us close the gap before the end of 2007.

After discussion with the architect and the JW School principal, we have decided that the following is the most efficient way to break down the project:

Phase 1 Demolish existing building and rebuild first level such that it can support 2 more levels. This will provide 2 additional classrooms by leveraging wasted space in the current design. (Timeframe: October, 2007 - January, 2008)
Phase 2 Build second level
Phase 3 Build third level

Note that this approach will increase the Phase 1 budget by $15,000. We think that in the long run, though, this will significantly reduce the cost and complexity of future phases.
